Foreword

We are all faced with an aging population in our parents, neighbors, friends, colleagues at work, and clients in the office with whom we must effectively interact. How many times have we felt frustration and misunderstandings with this group, who frequently need our help but seem to resist us at every turn? In my twenty years as a physician and teacher specializing in geriatric medicine, I have been in countless situations where communication issues with older persons were the crucial element in their own survival. Why won't they take the medicines I prescribe? Why do they insist on talking about things that seem irrelevant to their situation? Why do they resist changes that would so clearly benefit them? Get ready for light bulbs to flash and a feeling of aha! when you read in the following pages David Solie’s remarkable approach to improving your interactions with the seniors you encounter every day. Mr. Solie has a unique background that informs this book: training and experience as a health professional that preceded an outstanding career in business. His success is due in large part to his remarkable communication abilities which he has continually developed and enhanced over the years. In this book he shares his insight and research to enable all of us to overcome the challenges of communicating with older adults. I have spent most of my medical career caring for older persons in a variety of settings and teaching medical students and physician trainees about the field of geriatrics. And, even as I write this foreword, I am caring for an elderly parent who is recovering from an illness. I have found Mr. Solie’s insights extremely useful and applicable to both my medical work and interactions with my own parents. Reading this delightful book was not only enjoyable but triggered a flood of memories of older adults that gave me a new understanding of "why they do the things they do." I'm recommending it to my friends and anyone who comes in contact with this age group, and I know you will benefit from the information it contains in all your dealings with older adults.
